Tips stay unbeaten in 2010

CHILLIWACK, B.C. — The Everett Silvertips’ happy new year continued Friday night.

Everett kept its perfect 2010 going when the Tips defeated the Chilliwack Bruins 3-2. The victory was Everett’s seventh straight to begin the new year.

Byron Froese, Chris Langkow and Kellan Tochkin scored for Everett (26-16-2-1). Froese’s tally gave him goals in five straight games.

Thomas Heemskerk, playing in his hometown, made 28 saves to earn the win in goal for the Tips, who led the entire way after scoring less than four minutes into the game.

Everett has outscored its opponents 29-16 during the winning streak.

Dylen McKinlay and Mitch Topping scored for Chilliwack (20-21-1-5), which suffered its third straight loss. Lucas Gore stopped 25 shots in goal for the Bruins.

The same two teams square off tonight in Everett.

Everett avoided an early deficit thanks to Heemskerk, as he robbed Ryan Howse with a glove save on a two-on-one feed. The Tips took the lead soon after. On the power play, Gore poked the puck out of the crease, but it went right to Froese, who snapped a shot past Gore to make it 1-0 3:30 into the game.

The Tips doubled their lead at 17:51. Shane Harper just threw the puck on goal from along the boards off the rush. Langkow, driving the net down the middle, banged the rebound in to make it 2-0.

Chilliwack got a crucial goal with 48 seconds remaining in the period to stop the bleeding. McKinlay took advantage of a fumble by Everett defenseman Curtis Kulchar, then beat Heemskerk with a shot off the rush to make it 2-1.

But Everett restored its two-goal lead at 11:40 of the second. Harper shot wide from slot, but the puck banged off the back boards out front, where Tochkin had an easy goal to make it 3-1.

The Tips did a good job of putting a stranglehold on Chilliwack in the third period, with the exception of Topping’s slap shot from the point on the power play at 5:35, which made it 3-2. Otherwise, Chilliwack had few good looks on goal as the Tips killed off the game.
