Tips Week in Review: Everett splits slate in high-scoring week

The Silvertips were outscored 24-18 in four games this week, losing two to the next-best WHL teams

The Everett Silvertips played four games in five days for the second week in a row, leading to two wins, two losses and a lot of goals. The first three games of the week resembled football scores more so than ice hockey.

The two losses were humbling setbacks for the WHL leaders, as the Silvertips (79 points) lost by at least four goals to each of the next two best teams in the league: Medicine Hat (69 points) and Spokane (66 points).

Medicine Hat 7, Everett 3

The Everett Herald was on-site for a highly touted ‘Wednesday Night in the Dub’ matchup between the Eastern and Western Conference leaders. You can read the full coverage here.

In a battle between the top two teams in the WHL, headlined by top NHL prospects Landon DuPont and Gavin McKenna, the Tigers came out on top in a decisive 7-3 win. McKenna showed exactly why he’s projected to be picked first overall in the 2026 NHL Draft, recording a hat trick and an assist for Medicine Hat.

Winger Carter Bear opened the scoring for Everett at 9:12 of the first period, finishing off a pass from winger Jesse Heslop on the doorstep, but the Tigers scored three goals between 17:03 and 1:30 of the second period to quickly take a 3-1 lead.

The Silvertips cut it to 3-2 just 32 seconds into the third period, with winger Dominik Rymon ripping a one-timer from the high slot. However, 43 seconds later, Everett was penalized for having too many men on the ice, handing Medicine Hat a power play where they regained their two-goal lead at 1:41.

“Coming out in the third, we had some juice in the room,” DuPont told the Herald after the game. “Obviously scoring that big goal in the first shift was huge for us, and then obviously they come back right after that with a (few big) goals, and so that just really pushed us back.”

From there, the Tigers poured on three more goals, so by the time center Cole Temple scored at 19:06, the game was all but over.

Everett 7, Kelowna 3

The Silvertips scored six goals in the second period to flip the scoreline from Wednesday night into their favor against the Rockets.

Hiroki Gojsic scored 51 seconds into the game to give Kelowna an early lead, but DuPont scored his 12th goal of the season on a power play at 10:33 to tie it heading into the second.

DuPont notched his second point of the night, sending a long pass to Heslop down the right side of the ice. Heslop skated on net and was stopped, but Bear followed up the play to punch in the puck from under Kelowna goalie Jake Pilon’s glove and give Everett a 2-1 lead at 5:18 of the second period.

Kayden Longley tied it 2-2 for Kelowna at 7:19, but Temple took the lead back 15 seconds later with a wrister from the high slot. Everett got goals from winger Shea Bush, Temple again, and defenseman Tarin Smith in a 1:30 span to expand their lead to 6-2 just over the halfway point of the game.

Gojsic scored his second of the night at 13:42 to cut it to 6-3, but Temple managed to complete his hat trick in the final minute of the period, finishing off Bear’s pass from behind the net for the 7-3 final. Despite a scoreless third period, five different Silvertips players recorded three points on the night: Temple (three goals), DuPont (one goal, two assists), Bear (one goal, two assists), Heslop (three assists) and center Tyler MacKenzie (three assists).

Spokane 10, Everett 3

Just three days after suffering their worst loss of the season, the Silvertips fell even harder against the Chiefs, who stormed out with six goals in the first period.

Spokane winger Shea Van Olm scored at 6:11 and 9:09 of the first period to give Spokane a 2-0 lead, and Chase Harrington scored at 9:26 to quickly make it 3-0.

Busch stopped the bleeding with a power-play goal for Everett at 12:38, but Saige Weinstein scored 29 seconds after to restore the three-goal lead for Spokane. In his first game since allowing seven goals to Medicine Hat, goalie Jesse Sanche was pulled from the crease after allowing his fourth goal on just 12 shots (.750 save percentage). Raiden LeGall finished the rest of the game, allowing six goals on 16 shots (.625 save percentage).

“It was a long night,” Silvertips coach Steve Hamilton said. “It just didn’t start well, and you know, there [were] periods of time where we tried to get [it] going, but it’s one of those nights where we just didn’t have a lot.”

Bear scored his 35th goal of the season at 14:38 to cut it to 4-2, but the Chiefs tacked on two more at 16:05 then 17:06 to make it 6-2 entering the second period. Bear scored his second goal at 2:50 of the second, but that’s as close as it would get the rest of the night as Spokane scored four more times to run away with the victory. It marked the Chiefs’ second win against the Silvertips in 11 days.

Everett 5, Kamloops 4 (OT)

After a rough outing the previous night, the Silvertips started off trailing yet again. Vit Zahejsky broke through for the Blazers at 15:07 of the first period, and Jordan Keller doubled the lead on the power play at 5:07.

Just over a minute later, winger Caine Wilke put Everett on the board, finishing off Temple’s centering pass at 6:13. Temple continued his hot streak, assisting Rymon to tie it 2-2 at 10:25.

The Silvertips took a 3-2 lead at 13:00 thanks to an odd goal from defenseman Rylan Pearce, whose long shot bounced wide of the net, off the end boards and then ricocheted in off Blazers goalie Logan Edmonstone’s back.

The lead was short-lived, as Keller scored his second of the night just 1:38 later to tie it again. The Blazers went ahead 4-3 early in the third period with a goal from Josh Kelly.

Facing their third loss in four games, the Silvertips managed to tie it 4-4 at 9:13 of the third when Bear corralled the puck behind the net and connected with center Lukas Kaplan in front.

In overtime, Keller was called for cross-checking to set Everett up with a power play. Goalie Jesse Sanche, who finished with 28 saves, pushed the puck to Bear, who churned up the right side of the ice while pulling in all two Blazers defenders. Defenseman Tarin Smith was left open trailing the play and had plenty of time to corral the puck and unleash it from the high slot to secure the win at 3:52 of overtime.

“The boys definitely dug deep, even from the start of that game,” Smith said. “Like I said before, everyone’s exhausted, but it’s huge that we all come together there at the end and get the job done.”

Three Stars of the Week:

First Star: Carter Bear. The 18-year-old winger has scored at least one point in 11 of the past 12 games, including eight points (four goals, four assists) in four games this week. With the exception of his two goals in the blowout loss to Spokane on Saturday, every point came in meaningful moments. He capped it off with assists on the tying and winning goals against Kamloops on Sunday.

Second Star: Cole Temple. The 17-year-old center’s hat trick in Friday’s 7-3 win against Kelowna highlighted his week, but Temple also recorded at least one point in the other three games, including two assists in Sunday’s 5-4 overtime win against the Blazers.

Third Star: Tarin Smith. The 18-year-old defenseman had two goals and four assists across the four games this week, including the overtime winning goal on Sunday, which earned him First Star of the Game. Smith extended his point streak to six games.

The week ahead:

After back-to-back four-game weeks, the Silvertips will only play twice this weekend, with both games on the road. Everett will square off with Kamloops once again on Friday, just five days after their 5-4 overtime win on Feb. 2. The Silvertips have won each of the three previous matchups this season. After that, Vancouver will host Everett on Saturday. The Giants won the first matchup 4-3 in the season-opener on Sept. 21, and the Silvertips won the second game 7-1 on Nov. 29.
