Tips Week in Review: Everett wins three, loses one

The Silvertips scored 16 goals and conceded nine last weekend.

The Everett Silvertips entered this past weekend on a three-game win streak, and the win column increased by three more victories over Lethbridge, Kamloops and Kelowna. However, the Silvertips tallied their fifth loss of the season against Spokane in a shootout.

Everett remained atop the Western Conference, U.S. Division and Western Hockey League (WHL) standings heading into the beginning of December.

Everett 4, Lethbridge 0

The Silvertips battled the Hurricanes in the first meeting between both teams, and it resulted in Everett’s second shutout of the season. Right winger Jesse Heslop, unassisted, opened the scoring just over halfway into the second period, which was followed three minutes later by center Caine Wilke’s score, assisted by center Lukas Kaplan and defenseman Tarin Smith. Defenseman Eric Jamieson made it 3-0 three minutes after, assisted by defenseman Landon DuPont and center Carter Bear. And center Julius Miettinen scored the Silvertips’ final goal in the first 30 seconds of the third period, assisted by Bear and left winger Dominik Rymon. Goalie Alex Garrett was Everett’s wall, saving all 33 shots and registering his first shutout of the season.

Spokane 4, Everett 3

The Silvertips suffered their fifth loss of the season against the Chiefs in the first meeting between both teams. Once Smith, assisted by Miettinen, opened the scoring just over midway through the first period, Spokane responded with two goals 10 minutes apart from one another in the second period. Smith netted his second goal just over four minutes into the third period, assisted by Mietinnen and Bear, but Spokane regained the lead about nine minutes later. Rymon, assisted by Bear and center Tyler MacKenzie, scored Everett’s third goal 30 seconds before the end of the third period to force overtime. With neither team breaking the ice in OT, the Silvertips went 0-3 in the shootout, and the Chiefs went 1-2 for the victory. Garrett saved 27 of 30 shots during regulation and all five during overtime.

Everett 5, Kamloops 2

The Silvertips topped the Blazers in the first meeting between both teams. Neither side scored in the first period, but Kamloops netted its first goal just over three minutes into the second period. MacKenzie, assisted by recently signed right winger Jaxsin Vaughan and Rymon, tied it less than 30 seconds later. Jamieson, assisted by MacKenzie and DuPont, took the lead in the final six minutes of the period, which was followed by defenseman Kaden Hammell’s goal, assisted by Bear, two minutes later. Kamloops netted its second with less than two minutes remaining before the third period. Rymon, assisted by Vaughan, increased the spread by two goals 24 seconds into the final period, and Bear, assisted by MacKenzie, finished the contest with the fifth score on an open net within the final two minutes. Goalkeeper Raiden LeGall made his debut and saved 29 of 31 shots.

Everett 4, Kelowna 3

The Silvertips played the Rockets in their third game of the season and won 6-3, and they were also able to win the rematch. However, the victory required a three-goal, third-period rally and some overtime endurance. Kelowna scored the first goal of the contest about six minutes into the first period, which was followed by the second score four minutes later. The Rockets then netted their third goal in the final three minutes of the second period. Rymon, assisted by Hammell and MacKenzie, put Everett on the scoreboard 30 seconds into the start of the third period. Miettinen, assisted by DuPont and Smith, tallied the second goal with less than seven minutes remaining, and Rymon, assisted by DuPont, tied it four minutes later. Hammell, assisted by MacKenzie, notched the overtime goal in the first two minutes of the fourth period. Garrett saved 32 of 35 shots.

Three stars of the week

First star: Dominik Rymon. The 20-year-old registered four goals and two assists in the past four games. He netted Everett’s tying goal in the Spokane game to put the Silvertips into overtime, and he scored two goals in the third-period rally against Kelowna.

Second star(s): Carter Bear and Tyler MacKenzie. The 18-year-old and 20-year-old each recorded one goal and five assists this past weekend.

Third star(s): Landon DuPont and Julius Miettinen. DuPont, the 15-year-old, assisted four goals, and Miettinen, the 18-year-old, scored two goals and had two assists this past weekend.

Fourth star(s): Jaxsin Vaughan and Raiden LeGall. Vaughan, the 18-year-old, was signed last week and made his debut against Kamloops where he assisted two goals. LeGall, the 18-year-old, made his goalkeeper debut in the same game and saved 29 of 31 shots.

The week ahead

Everett has three games scheduled this week. The Silvertips face Victoria on Wednesday in the first meeting between both teams before a rematch against Vancouver on Friday; Everett lost 4-3 to the Giants in the first game of the season. The Silvertips then have another rematch against Kamloops on Saturday.
