It’s the second of the Three Days of Griffey when the Mariners face the Brewers this afternoon in Peoria. Junior is back in the lineup, at DH this time, after playing four innings in left field Thursday night. Saturday, he’ll return to left field.
Yes, Griffey walking without a limp. No, he didn’t let Adrian Beltre get to his locker this morning without taking a verbal poke at the third baseman who saved Griffey from a tough play in the first inning last night. That’s when Beltre literally saved his face by snagging a head-high line drive by the Padres’ Scott Hairston. If the ball gets past Beltre, Griffey is digging into the left-field corner to retrieve it.
Ever seen a play like that?
“Oh yeah,” Griffey said. “Just never from that angle.”
OK, today’s Mariners lineup:
Ronny Cedeno, SS (Another chance to do something that Betancourt won’t)
Matt Tuiasosospo 3B (Getting better all the time)
Ken Griffey Jr. DH (Feeling good. Looking good. Hitting will come?)
Wladimir Balentien CF (These are big games for man without minor league options)
Russell Branyan 1B (Everything he hits is hard right now)
Rob Johnson C (Quietly doing a nice job, even at the plate with .368 average)
Mike Wilson LF (Watch out on the berm when this guy is hitting)
Tyson Gillies RF (Most exciting young player in camp)
Chris Woodward 2B (bald head, goatee…related to Bill Bavasi?)
Jason Vargas, LHP (Never too late to make an impression, especially if you’re left-handed)
