Craig Iversen thought this would be a rebuilding season for his Marysville-Pilchuck boys wrestling team. Well, that rebuilding season resulted in Wesco 3A North regular-season and postseason championships for the Tomahawks.
“There’s been quite a few surprises,” Iversen said. “We had a strong freshman class that really helped us, and the seniors jelled and became leaders. A (conference title) is rare to get; the kids should feel good about it. There’s some quality coaches and programs in this conference. It’s very competitive.”
Marysville Pilchuck had 17 wrestlers finish in the top six of Saturday’s 3A District 1 meet to advance to this weekend’s regional round, including Cole Daurie at 106 pounds and Keith Pablo at 170 pounds.
“Cole has wrestled at 113 all year, but we feel good about him going back down to 106. He feels strong, and he should have a great shot at that weight,” Iversen said. “Keith finished fifth at state two years ago, but fell short at regionals last year. Hopefully (last year’s result) gets his hunger going a bit. He’s an incredible athlete, with raw athleticism.”
