First-round pick Russell Okung signed this afternoon, and about 15 minutes into the start of practice, he came out onto the field and joined the team for a full-pads practice.
Okung spent the day with the second-team offense at left tackle, while Ray Willis stayed with the No. 1 offense. Pete Carroll said that Okung is behind and won’t join the first team until he is caught up, adding that it will likely be between seven to 10 days before Okung moves into the starting lineup.
Okung ended up the last first-round pick signed, but ended up, after missing six days, signing for an amount that fell right in the slot between the fifth and seven picks, bringing up the question, what took so long?
Okung steered clear of that question, saying he didn’t want to talk about the business side of things, but that he was just happy to be back on the field.
Carroll, meanwhile, indicated that the deal should have happened sooner, and that the team held its ground in the negotiation.
Linebacker Aaron Curry continues to sit out after suffering a concussion on the first day of camp, and Carroll said the team is being careful with him and that Curry now is target for a Tuesday or Wednesday return.
As for the practice itself, CB Marcus Trufant had one of his better days, despite being beaten deep early by Deon Butler. After that play happened, Trufant later came up with two impressive, leaping interceptions. Another impressive veteran today was WR Deion Branch, who had three touchdowns during a red-zone drill.
And a few days after the Seahawks had a couple of attempts at trick plays fail, running back Leon Washington hit tight end John Carlson in the end zone on a halfback pass.
