Greetings from Everett Memorial Stadium, where I’m expecting a heavy dose of SpongeBob SquarePants blaring through the speakers for today’s Kid’s Day with the Everett AquaSox. The Sox clinched a playoff berth last night, meaning they’ll be playing meaningful games in September — and complicating my schedule for Silvertips training camp.
Speaking of training camp, it’s hard to believe it’s just over a month away. Didn’t summer just start?
There’s some changes to Everett’s camp this year, the biggest being the location. The circus is coming to town early this year, creating a conflict at Comcast Arena. Therefore, camp will take place at Lynnwood Ice Center.
Also, the format is changing. The veterans and rookies will report at the same time, as they did last year, but they won’t be on the ice together. In the mornings four teams of rookies will square off in scrimmages, then in the afternoon the veterans will be put through practice. A select few rookies will join the veterans in the afternoon sessions.
The players will report on Wednesday, Aug. 25, then take the ice for the first time on Thursday, Aug. 26. The annual Green vs. Grey game will take place Sunday, also in Lynnwood.
