Tri-City beats Tips 3-1

KENNEWICK — The Everett Silvertips were three minutes away from ensuring themselves at least a point. But Drew Hoff made sure that didn’t happen

Hoff scored the tie-breaking goal with just under three minutes remaining, and the Tri-City Americans went on to defeat the Silvertips 3-1 Friday night.

Hoff was the trailer on the rush when Blair Macaulay found him with a pass. Hoff one-timed a shot past diving Everett goaltender Leland Irving for what proved to be the game winner with 2 minutes, 59 seconds remaining. Colton Yellow Horn added an empty-net goal with 33 seconds remaining to provide the final margin.

Jason Reese also scored for Tri-City (24-7-1-0), which avenged its two losses in Everett last week. Chet Pickard made 23 saves to earn the win in goal for the Americans.

Jonathan Harty scored the lone goal for Everett (16-16-0-2). Irving kept the Tips in the game with solid play throughout and finished with 27 saves.

Everett, despite being outplayed for much of the game, found itself in good shape in the third tied 1-1. The Tips picked up their play, and even found themselves with a lengthy five-on-three power play for a golden opportunity to take the lead. However, an interference penalty taken by Clayton Bauer just two seconds into the five-on-three nullified that chance, and the Tips couldn’t score on the four-on-three.

The game continued to be played at a quick pace when, with 6:28 remaining, a hit along the boards shattered a panel of glass along the penalty box. A 15-minute delay ensued, and the Americans scored shortly after the delay.

Tri-City opened the scoring 6:05 into the game. Shaun Vey brought the puck into the Everett zone on the rush and shot. Irving made the save, but a crashing Reese put in the rebound to make it 1-0.

Everett then broke a lengthy power-play drought to tie it up at 12:21 of the second period. Kyle Beach carried the puck into the zone on the rush and fed a drop pass to Harty, who one-timed a shot past Pickard to make it 1-1. The goal ended an 0-for-27 stretch for Everett’s power play.
