Here’s some thoughts and notes from Tuesday:
– The Dave Piland memorial service was today at Comcast Arena. It was a nice ceremony and well attended. One has to admire how many people Dave touched during his lifetime.
– Dane Crowley was back with the team today. He said he was glad to be back in Everett. His presence will be a big boost to Everett’s defense this season.
– Speaking of defense, there no panic going on over the 11 goals surrendered during Everett’s 0-2 start. The general belief is that the things that went wrong are easily correctable. Then add in that Leland Irving was using his Silvertips goalie equipment for the first time since last season’s playoffs, and there’s plenty of room for improvement.
– And speaking of Crowley, his return puts pressure on Everett’s overage situation. The Tips now have five overagers — Crowley, forwards Dan Gendur, Brennan Sonne and Brandon Campos, and goaltender David Reekie — and need to get down to three by Oct. 11. Reekie receives a temporary pass because of his mononucleosis, but Everett is still overloaded. Based on the way the lines were handled in the first two games it would appear that Gendur and Sonne are the likeliest to join Crowley as Everett’s overagers this season. Expect a move in the next couple days.
– And now that Everett essentially has its team for the season (Peter Mueller and Ondrej Fiala are not being counted on to return from their pro tryouts), the Tips can move ahead with picking their captains, though it’s likely they’ll sort out the overager situation first. Unlike in previous years, when the players picked the captains, management and the coaches will make the selections this season.
