Tuesday update

First off, here’s a rundown on the David Reekie situation:

– Reekie came down with mononucleosis during the second week of September.

– When the Tips found out, they placed Reekie on the 60-day injured list, based on the unpredictable nature of mono’s duration.

– Being on the 60-day injured list means Reekie is exempt from all roster/list restrictions during those 60 days, but he cannot play in a WHL game during that period. Once on the list, a player cannot come off until the 60 days are up. Therefore, Reekie cannot play until November. Everett general manager Doug Soetaert said he thought the final date was Nov. 8, Reekie sounded confident it was Nov. 9, so we’ll go with that for now.

– The first follow-up blood test for mono takes place four weeks after the original diagnosis, which for Reekie happened to coincide with the week of the overager deadline. Reekie’s tests came back clean, but by then it was too late include him in any overager decisions as Reekie was already on the 60-day injured list.

– Reekie is participating fully in Everett’s practices now, but he has to play the waiting game. The Tips can trade Reekie whenever they want, but he still wouldn’t be able to play for his new team until the 60 days are up. Given that acquiring Reekie would cloud any other team’s overager situation, it’s unlikely any move involving Reekie would happen until Reekie’s ready to come off the list.

– Whether the Tips have to make an overager decision the day Reekie comes off the list was not yet known. Soetaert said he planned on contacting the league this week to find out whether the Tips would have to move one of their overagers on that day or whether the team will be given any leeway.

The other bit of news from today is that broadcaster Jon Rosen has returned to Everett and will be back doing play-by-play Friday in Kelowna. Rosen was in California the last 10 days tending to his mother, who succumbed to her battle with appendiceal cancer.
