Tulalip falls to A/C-H in quarterfinals

YAKIMA — Derek Isaak scored 26 points and hit seven 3-pointers to lead second-ranked Almira/Coulee-Hartline to a 57-50 victory over Tulalip Heritage in a Class 1B boys state basketball quarterfinal game Thursday.

The Warriors (21-4) will face Tri-Cities Prep (19-6) in today’s semifinals.

ACH took an early lead and never surrendered it. The advantage grew to 18 points late in the third quarter before Tulalip rallied with a 19-5 run that cut the score to 54-50 with 1:54 to play. The Hawks couldn’t get closer.

Cody Jess chipped in 11 points for the Warriors, and Garrett Jess and Kyle Tucker each pulled down seven rebounds.

Lesjar McKinney paced Tulalip Heritage (21-3) with 20 points and eight rebounds. He scored 15 points in the second half, and keyed the Hawks’ rally with 12 of those points.

Oakville 67, North Sound Christian 47: At Yakima, Jeremy Waller scored a team-high 19 points and teammate Ian Watson added eight points and 12 rebounds for North Sound Christian in a loser-out consolation game at the Class 1B state tournament.

Moses Lake Christian 60, Curlew 43: At Yakima, Riggs Yarbro scored a game-high 26 points and Adrian Moffet added 15 as top-ranked Moses Lake Christian pulled away from Curlew for a 60-43 win in the Class 1B boys state quarterfinals.

Yarbro hit 10 of 15 shots and 6 of 7 free throws. He scored five of his 16 second-half points during a 12-4 run midway through the fourth quarter that put the game out of reach.

Isaac Murrell chipped in 11 points for the Lions, including a trio of 3-pointers.

Moses Lake Christian dominated the backboards, 41-27. Yarbro pulled down 15, including 10 offensive rebounds.

Jordon Wakefield paced the Cougars (19-6) with 23 points and 14 rebounds.

Girls

St. Michael 42, North Sound Christian 25: At Yakima, St. Michael’s defeated North Sound Christian Thursday night in the quarterfinals of the 1B state tournament at the Yakima Sun Dome. North Sound Christian plays previously unbeaten Lummi today at 4 p.m. in a loser-out consolation game. If the Lions win, they play at noon on Saturday for fourth place.

St. John-Endicott 54, Lummi 43: At Yakima, Kelly Van Lith scored 13 of her team-high 20 points after halftime to lead St. John-Endicott to a quarterfinal victory over Lummi in the Class 1B girls state tournament Thursday.

The Eagles (18-4) advance to Friday’s 8 p.m. semifinals.

Trisha Luft added 11 points and Alyssa FitzGerald nine. St. John-Endicott trailed early, but overtook Lummi in the second quarter and never looked back.

Sunnyside Christian 48, Columbia 29: At Yakima, Melanie Van Wingerden scored 10 points, and fourth-ranked Sunnyside Christian steadily pulled away from No. 5 Columbia of Hunters for a 48-29 win in the Class 1B girls state quarterfinals.

The Knights (19-5) will face top-ranked Colton (22-0) in Friday’s semifinals.

Van Wingerden’s basket to open the second quarter that put the Knights ahead to stay. She was the only SC player in double-figures, but three teammates had at least eight points.

SC shot 45 percent for the game, while Columbia (19-5) was made just 21 percent of its shots and just 3 of 25 attempts in the second half.

Krista Colvin led the Lions with 20 points.
