SHORELINE – Saturday was a perfect day for Lindsey Newman.
Competing in the Elks Hoopshoot district competition, Newman sank all 25 of her free throws to win the girls 12-13 age division.
Newman, a student at South Whidbey Middle School, advances to the state competition, scheduled for Feb. 14 at Chinook Middle School in Bellevue.
Newman will be joined at the state competition by Zach Houghtaling of Everett. Houghtaling, a student at Fairmount Elementary School in Everett, won the boys 8-9 age division on Saturday. He made 18 of his 25 shots.
The national finals of the Elks Hoopshoot are scheduled for April 22-24 in Springfield, Mass.
Bowling
Wilson, Plunkett lead Cascade: Jason Wilson of Cascade High School rolled the high game and his teammate Jordan Plunkett recorded the high series last week as the Bruins held onto first place in the Everett High School Mixed Bowling League.
Wilson rolled a high game of 289. Plunkett, the league’s scoring leader with an average of 210.5, bowled a 728 series.
Cascade remained in first place in the team standings with 338 points. Everett was second (323) and Lake Stevens third (312.5)
Among the girls, Meredith Collins of Kamiak rolled the week’s high game (256) and high series (584). She moved into second place on the league scoring list with an average of 166.2. Grace Cook of Lake Stevens leads the girls at 185.2.
Soccer
Avalanche unbeaten: The Cascade Avalanche U-14 boys soccer team has posted a 2-0-1 record in bracket play and has yet to allow a goal in the Washington Youth Soccer Association State Championships.
The Avalanche defeated Bainbridge, 4-0, on Jan. 10, then shut out the Northwest Arsenal, 5-0, on Jan. 17.
This past Sunday, the Avalanche played FC Vancouver to a scoreless tie.
Basketball
Monroe team scrimmages at Sonic game: The Monroe Bearcats sixth-grade boys select basketball held an intrasquad scrimmage at KeyArena last Tuesday prior to the NBA game between the Dallas Mavericks and the Seattle SuperSonics. Players taking part included Matt Kane, Kelen Jensen, Preston Love, Jacob Bartness, Justin Klinich, Spencer Nelson, Cody Elledge, Tyler Layson, Brandon Hill, Sam Lustyuk and Derek Hoff. The team is coached by Jim Jensen and Steve Hill.
