Two cousins, four titles at 4A district boys track meet

SHORELINE — Two cousins. Four district titles. One amazing meet.

Shoreline Stadium was a magical venue this week for Marlyn Anderson and Sean Roe. Anderson, a powerful Snohomish High School senior, and Roe, a lanky Jackson High sophomore, each won two individual events during the Class 4A District 1 track and field championships at Shoreline Stadium.

The experience had extra significance for Anderson and Roe — beyond personal and team goals — because they are cousins. Their mothers are sisters, and the boys live about 5 minutes from one another, in Silver Firs and Mill Creek, respectively.

“Marlyn is a great guy. Especially in track, he’s been like a big brother to me,” said Roe, who capped a distance double by winning the 3,200 Friday, following his 1,600 victory Wednesday.

“It’s kind of a cool thing — keep it all in the same family. “We encourage each other,” said Anderson, who finished first in the shot put Wednesday and prevailed in the discus Friday.

After winning the discus, Anderson sent inspiring texts to Roe right up until the 3,200 and then watched from the infield.

“Before the race he was sending me messages saying, ‘Give it your all buddy’ and ‘Go for the gold’ and ‘Give it your best shot.’ Words like that — it just gave me pure motivation,” Roe said.

The top three finishers in each district event qualified for the state meet next week in Tacoma. The two-day district championships concluded Friday with about half of the field finals and most of the track finals, which were set up by Wednesday’s prelims.

The overwhelming team champion was Jackson, which won the district title for the first time in at least five years, according to Timberwolves coach Eric Hruschka. Jackson (150 points) topped second-place Lake Stevens by 54 points.

Besides Roe, Jackson’s individual winners were Cameron Grossaint (400), Blake Nelson (800) and Dan Truong, who set a meet record in the triple jump with a top distance of 45 feet, 1 inch.

“We scored in every area,” coach Hruschka said. “It’s just really great to see a complete team.”

Loaded with talented distance runners, Jackson earned 1-2-3 sweeps in the 1,600 and 800. In the latter event, Nelson won in 1:56.39, followed closely by Derek Woolsey (1:56.74) and Grant Grosvenor (1:56.79).

Coming off of an excellent league meet last week, Edmonds-Woodway’s Alec Fellows qualified for state in three events: 110 hurdles, triple jump and long jump. The sophomore won the hurdles race in 14.67 seconds, just .08 slower than the meet record.

The 110 hurdles runnerup was Stanwood’s Robert Hanke, a junior who later finished first in the 300 hurdles. Hanke’s time in the 300 hurdles (39.28) broke the meet record by .05. But it was actually slower than his winning time a week ago at the Wesco North championships, 38.71.
