Several area athletes made college decisions recently, including two Wesco South girls basketball standouts.
Edmonds-Woodway forward Angela Woods has made a verbal commitment to play basketball next season at North Idaho College in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Woods, The Herald’s 2010 Girls Basketball Player of the Year, led the Warriors in scoring in her senior season, averaging 14.6 points per game. Edmonds-Woodway advanced to the 2011 Class 4A state tournament but did not place. The North Idaho women’s team opens next season as the defending national champion, having won the 2011 National Junior College Athletic Association title in March.
“North Idaho graduated eight sophomores, so that kind of weighed on her decision,” EW coach Duane Hodges said of Woods. “There is going to be lots of playing time.”
Kamiak’s Lexi Burns has signed with Lindenwood University to play women’s basketball. Lindenwood University is an NAIA school in St. Charles, Missouri. During her senior career at Kamiak, Burns, a guard, led the Knights in scoring with 283 points and 3-point goals with 48. She averaged 12.9 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 1.6 assists per game and was named to the Wesco South All-League First Team.
The following Archbishop Murphy High School student-athletes will sign with their respective college programs at 8 a.m. on May 5 during a celebration in the Archbishop Brunett Conference Room in Heath Hall: Amber Manuel (Whitworth University softball), Zach Smith (The University of Montana Western men’s basketball) and Cam Wade (U.S. Naval Academy Prep School wrestling).
