SAO PAULO, Brazil — A bus carrying a third-division soccer team in Brazil plunged off a 130-foot ravine after a game, killing two players and a coach. More than 20 people sustained minor injuries.
The accident happened early Friday in the southern state of Rio Grande do Sul. The driver seemed to lose control of the bus approaching a turn, the federal highway police said.
The three who died were 34-year-old Uruguayan striker Claudio Milar, the top player for Brasil de Pelotas in recent years; defender Regis; and goalkeeping coach Giovani.
Among the injured was Brazil goalkeeper Danrlei, a reserve in the 1996 Olympics and a starter for the first-division team Gremio when it won the 1995 Copa Libertadores.
Since arriving in 2002, Milar had scored more than 100 goals in more than 200 games with Brasil de Pelotas. The team was returning from a 2-1 victory in an exhibition game against Santa Cruz. Its debut in the Rio Grande do Sul state championship next week has been postponed.
