It was an ugly first half of basketball, with both Washington and Oregon State looking pretty sloppy on offense and the UW leading 41-38. Both teams are shooting a high percentage – the Huskies are at 53.6 percent and OSU is at 55.2 percent – but both are turning it over a lot. Washington has 10 turnovers, leading to 11 Beavers points and OSU has seven turnovers leading to 13 Washington points.
What’s most surprising is the success OSU is having inside against Washington, outscoring the Huskies 24-20 in the paint. Spencer Hawes has only played eight minutes. OSU center Kyle Jeffers, not typically a big scorer, is 6-for-7 for 12 points.
The effort, though, is there, with Jon Brockman and Justin Dentmon in particular scrambling for loose balls. But Washington needs a convincing win today heading back on the road next week.
Dentmon is making a play for Pac-10 Player of the Week, scoring 14 points on 5-for-8 shooting, and Brockman had 12 points on 5-for-5 shooting, but both have three turnovers.
At halftime, the school presented former Husky baseball star Tim Lincecum with the Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s top collegiate player last year. Lincecum was the No. 10 pick in last year’s draft and is the San Francisco Giants’ top prospect.
The school also honored a large group of former players and coaches, including Marv Harshman, Bob Houbregs and Chester Dorsey.
