This week dozens of athletes from around the state are in town preparing for Saturday’s 2007 East-West All-Star Football Game. It features many of the most talented, highly recruited players from the 3A and 4A high school classifications. Here’s a closer look at one of the stars.
School
Moses Lake High School
Size and position
6-foot-3, 298 pounds, defensive tackle
College plans
Accepted a full-ride athletic scholarship to play for Washington State University. Said he’s always been a Cougars fan: “I’ve gone to a lot of their games. They’ve always caught my eye for some reason. Getting a chance to prove myself and show them what I have is awesome.”
How does it feel to be a part of the East-West game?
“It’s a big honor just to be recognized as one of the best in the state of Washington,” Guerra said. “You compete against guys you’ve heard about and never knew how good they really were.”
Walk the line
As a Moses Lake freshman, Guerra was a 6-2, 250-pounder who yearned to play running back. Coaches, however, quickly switched him to the line.
Favorite pro athlete
Baltimore Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis, a 6-1, 250-pound, 12-year NFL veteran. “There’s just something about him,” said Guerra. “He’s always around the ball. He has a lot of intensity and he’s always upbeat.”
Favorite sports movie
“Remember the Titans” (2000) starring Denzel Washington, who plays a first-year football coach trying to unite a racially integrated team. Guerra and his teammates watched it before games during the 2006 playoffs.
Life philosophy
“Don’t let chances pass you by, and do everything to your fullest, to the best of your ability.”
Non-sports hobby
Drawing cartoons.
Non-sports dream job
Wants to be a head coach or a physical education teacher.
