University of Washington women fight back then fold in final three minutes

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Sybil Dosty had 17 points and 10 rebounds and Briann January added 13 points and five assists, leading Arizona State past Washington 83-64 on Saturday in the second round of the Pacific-10 Conference tournament.

The third-seeded Sun Devils advanced to Sunday’s semifinals against the winner of Saturday’s second quarterfinal between No. 10 California and Oregon.

Arizona State (21-9) is hoping to make a strong bid to earn the Pac-10 a third NCAA tournament berth and a fourth straight for the school.

Katelan Redmon scored 15 points and grabbed nine rebounds for Washington, which was outrebounded 41-30 and finished its first season under coach Tia Jackson at 13-18. Laura McLellan added 14 points on 7-for-8 shooting and Sami Whitcomb scored 11.

The Sun Devils led throughout the second half but had to hit key baskets in crunch time. Washington cut the margin to nine at 67-58 with just more than three minutes to play before Reagan Pariseau hit back-to-back 3-pointers for Arizona State to put it out of reach.

Arizona State led by as many as 21 early in the second half, but that’s when Washington came alive. The Huskies cut the lead to 56-45 with 10:08 to play after a 19-8 run.

The Sun Devils held a 43-22 advantage at halftime, hitting 58 percent of their field goals. They used a 24-8 run midway through the half to break open a 13-11 game and make it 37-19 with 3:25 remaining. Dosty had six of her points during the run.

All five Arizona State starters scored in double figures. Pariseau finished with 12 before fouling out in the final minute, Lauren Lacey also scored 12 and Jill Noe added 10 points and four assists.
