Fueled by Candland’s strong anchor leg, Cedarcrest placed second behind Lynden in the 1,600 relay.

That’s it. A long, long weekend of track and field is over. Congrats to all the local winners, and to all the outstanding competitors from other schools. You all put on a great show.

Thank goodness I just have to write about these kids and not compete against them.

Goodbye from Tacoma.

One more event to go: the 2A boys 1,600 relay. Cedarcrest, led by anchor-leg runner Adam Candland, has a chance to contend.

Some more results:

*Jackson’s Alison Ponce took seventh in the 4A girls 1,600. The senior’s time was 5:02.83.

*In the 4A boys long jump, Stanwood’s Kale Schmidt was seventh (22 feet, 4.5 inches) and Edmonds-Woodway’s Alec Fellows was eighth (22-1.75).

*Jackson’s Sean Roe placed seventh in the 4A boys 1,600 (4.21.10).

Mount Rainier looks amazing again here at Mount Tahoma Stadium, thanks to another day of clear, blue skies.

I doubt the athletes get to appreciate the view — they’ve got enough other things on their minds — but I try to take a few seconds to enjoy it, in between interviews and retrieving results.

Speaking of results, here is a new one:

*Everett’s Suzy Olsen was fifth in the 3A girls 1,600. Her time was 5:14.91. Olsen came in ranked No. 1 by Athletic.net.

We only have a few more events to go. The west bleachers are still packed with excited fans. The east bleachers are not nearly as full, especially the spots getting direct sunlight. I think some people have had more than enough sun for awhile. Not me.

I got results from the 2A boys 400, won by Cedarcrest’s Adam Candland (see below). Candland won in a personal-record time of 49.25 seconds. His previous best was 49.33.

In the 3A girls 400, Glacier Peak’s Stephenie Cummings placed second. The junior’s time was 57.28. Rainier Beach’s Dyneeca Adams won it in 56.89.

Other results

*In the 4A girls javelin, Arlington sophomore Stephanie Van Slageren and Stanwood freshman Kaci Jones were fourth and fifth, respectively. Their best throws traveled 128 feet, 2 inches and 127-3.

*Sultan’s Rici Morrill placed sixth in the 2A girls 1,600.

*Marysville-Pilchuck’s Alisha Oden was seventh in the 4A girls 400.

*Glacier Peak’s Devon Kiser took eighth in the 3A boys high jump. He cleared 6-4.

In one remarkable year, Cedarcrest’s Adam Candland went from not getting past the 400-meter dash prelims at state to winning it all.

Candland, a senior, just won the 2A boys 400. He is the first male Cedarcrest track champion in 14 years, according to Cedarcrest co-head coach Bruce McDowell. (Jacob Predmore won back-to-back triple jump titles for Cedarcrest in 1994 and 1995.)

Candland, scheduled to run the anchor leg in Cedarcrest’s upcoming 1,600 relay race, held off some challengers in the 400 during the final straightaway. Wearing bright-blue track shoes that look extra flashy compared to his black uniform, Candland also wore blue wool socks — kind of a crazy idea in this hot weather, right? The socks are a good-luck charm, Candland said. He has worn them for races throughout high school.

A brief look at some other results:

*Lakewood’s Taylor Guske finished sixth in the 2A boys 1,600 in 4:28.61. Blaine’s Tim Bradley, one of Guske’s district rivals, won it in 4:20.72. Through 13 scored events, Lakewood is tied for fourth in the team standings with 28 points.

*Shorecrest freshman Nicole Harris took seventh in the 3A girls pole vault. She cleared 9 feet, 6 inches. Mount Spokane’s Kaycee Smith won the event (10-6).

*Shorecrest’s Alexis Ramos was eighth in the 3A girls 100 dash (12.69 seconds). Franklin Pierce’s Germe Poston won in a meet-record time of 11.63. … Shorecrest’s Ramos also ran on the Scots’ 400 relay team, which placed fourth. Lynnwood was third in the race. Through 13 scored events, Shorecrest is fifth in the team standings with 27 points.

OK, I just saw got the results sheet for the 2A 300 hurdles race. Murphy’s Sarah Schireman took second place with a time of 44.92 seconds, .01 faster than her preliminary time. Pullman’s Niina Al-Hassan won in 44.51.

Also competing in the 2A girls 300 hurdles final was South Whidbey’s Laura Barrow (seventh place, 48.73).

Through 10 scored 2A girls events, Archbishop Murphy leads the team standings with 26 points, all of them scored by Schireman. That total doesn’t include the eight points Schireman also earned today in the long jump.

Up until the second-to-last hurdle, Stanwood’s Robert Hanke was in good shape. But his chance to win the Class 4A 300-meter hurdles race evaporated when he clipped the obstacle with his right foot.

It was still a close finish, but Hanke placed second behind winner Adam Scalesse of Kelso. Scalesse won in 38.46 seconds, .11 faster than Hanke.

It was Hanke’s second top-eight performance of the meet. On Friday he took seventh in the 110 hurdles.

Elsewhere around Mount Tahoma Stadium

*The Shorecrest girls 800 relay team placed second in 1:44.03, well behind champion Rainier Beach (1:39.49), which broke its own meet record. Through eight scored events, Shorecrest (19 points) is fourth in the 3A girls team standings. Columbia River leads with 38 points.

*Shorewood’s Erin Johnson took sixth in the 4A girls 800 run. The sophomore’s time was 2:17.05.

*Cedarcrest’s Freddie Stevens placed eighth in the 2A boys discus. Hi best throw traveled 142 feet, 4 inches.

I don’t have official results yet, but I was told Archbishop Murphy’s Sarah Schireman placed second in the 2A girls long jump and the 2A girls 300 hurdles. That gives Schireman one first-place medal (100 hurdles) and three second-place medals (triple jump, long jump, 300 hurdles) this weekend. Pretty incredible. She has definitely been one of the most outstanding girls in the meet.

It’s been a whirlwind weekend of track and field craziness here in Tacoma, where the 2A, 3A and 4A meets wrap up today. Our local athletes have accomplished some incredible things, giving me and Herald Writer Alex Bosworth more than enough to write about.

Here is a quick recap of highlights from the past two days.

DAY ONE

*Archbishop Murphy’s Sarah Schireman hustles to hurdles win

*Cascade thrower Brittany Jones has an off day

*Snohomish High’s Marlyn Anderson wins another title

*Lakewood teammates Cameron Hess and Payden Butler take 2nd and 3rd in 2A javelin

*Local state placers (includes results from the 1A, 2B and 1B meets)

DAY TWO

*Snohomish’s Marlyn Anderson wins Class 4A shot put title

*Shorecrest’s Emily Corona leaps to 3A high jump title

Area athletes have a chance to win more hardware today. I’m getting ready to watch Stanwood’s Robert Hanke run in the 300-meter hurdles event. He had the No. 1 preliminary time.
