Final score: Mountlake Terrace 40, Mariner 39

MOUNTLAKE TERRACE — Jacob Champoux scored 13 points, including three 3-point shots, and Mountlake Terrace edged Mariner 40-39 tonight in a key Western Conference South Division boys basketball game.

Champoux drilled two 3-pointers in the fourth quarter for Terrace (13-2 in division), which moved into sole possession of first place in the Wesco South.

Michael Minor scored a game-high 17 points for Mariner (12-3). Minor had a chance to win it at the end but his leaning 15-foot shoot rolled off the rim.

Score after third quarter: Mariner 29, Mountlake Terrace 26

Terrace’s offense was much more effective in the third quarter. The Hawks were more aggressive and finally made some high-percentage shots.

Mariner’s Michael Minor had just three points by halftime but he erupted with eight points in the third quarter. He helped make up for the Marauders’ miscues — they had five turnovers in the period.

Here’s an odd stat: Neither team has attempted a free throw yet. Weird.

Score at halftime Mariner 19, Mountlake Terrace 14

Is this a demolition zone? Because bricks were flying throughout the second quarter.

Mariner managed to increase its lead from three points to five, despite going 4 of 14 from the field (1 for 6 on 3-point shots). On the other end of the court, Terrace was 3 of 12 from the field.

I get the sense both teams are rushing a little. The players realize what’s at stake in this game — a leg up in the division-title race and a No. 1 seed in the 4A District 1 tournament — and they’re forcing quite a few long-range shots.

Mariner’s Tevin Dillon (eight points) leads everyone with eight points so far. No Terrace player has scored more than five. That’s how many Jacob Champoux and Jaykob Sells have each tallied.

Score after first quarter: Mariner 10, Mountlake Terrace 7

Tevin Dillon and Damascus Purnell combined to score all of Mariner’s points. Dillon attacked the basket and scored on several drives.

Dillon’s most spectacular basket was a fadeaway alley-oop from the right baseline. He elevated to catch a lob pass from Stefan Doerscher and flipped in a shot before crashing to the court.

I’m at Mountlake Terrace High School tonight where I’m about to cover a battle for first place in the Wesco South.

Mariner comes in as the hotter team, having won five straight games and eight of its past nine. Mountlake Terrace, on the other hand, endured a stunning overtime loss against Edmonds-Woodway on Friday.

Mariner and Terrace are both 12-2 in division games. After tonight they each have just three regular-season games remaining.

Earlier this season, Terrace beat Mariner 57-48 Jan. 6 in south Everett. Paul Clingan, Jacob Champoux and Ryan Sells combined to score 37 points for Terrace, which outscored Mariner 20-12 in the fourth quarter. MIchael Minor’s 15 points led Mariner.
