Two former Seagulls swept the top men’s honors July 18 at the 10th annual Benaroya Research Institute Triathlon at Seafair.

Rusty Pruden and Jeff Helmer, both Everett High School graduates, placed first and second, respectively, in the male competition at Seward Park in Seattle. Pruden set the course record with a time of 57 minutes, 5 seconds. Helmer finished in 58:12.

The Seafair event was a sprint triathlon that consisted of a 1/2-mile swim, 12-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run.

UPDATE

I did a phone interview today (July 29) with Pruden, a 2001 Everett High grad who competed in cross country, wrestling and track for the Seagulls before running at Clackamas Community College near Portland.

Pruden, 27, lives in the Totem Lake neighborhood of Kirkland. He has been doing triathlons since 2006 and estimates he has completed between 20 to 30 of them, including three this summer.

Looking ahead, Pruden wants to turn pro. He has several high-profile triathlons coming up the next few months. One of them is the ITU World Championship in Budapest, Hungary.
