Still seven weeks away from playing the first game of his junior season, Mariner High School running back/defensive back KeiVarae Russell already has big-time college scholarship offers.
I spoke to Mariner football coach John Ondriezek this week. He told me that Russell — a fast (4.5 seconds in the 40-yard dash), strong, intelligent (3.7 cumulative GPA) player — has received scholarship offers from Washington State University and the University of Wyoming, and has attracted lots of recruiting interest from other big-time programs.
The 6-foot, 175-pound Russell led the Western Conference South Division last year with 1,232 rushing yards (7.7 yards per carry). He rushed for 14 touchdowns and also had two TD receptions. Russell was named an All-Wesco South first team running back.
I plan to write about Russell for our upcoming 2010 high school football preview. In the meantime, check out his 2009 highlight video.
