MID-AFTERNOON UPDATE
I just spoke with a member of the Mariners’ staff who said Sexson’s shoulder situation is nothing serious, and that he’d be playing with it if it was the regular season. He has bursitis in the shoulder and was given a cortisone shot this morning.
From the “should anybody be worried yet” file, Mariners first baseman Richie Sexson had an injection into his sore right shoulder this morning and won’t play in this afternoon’s game.
Manager John McLaren stopped short of saying Sexson would be able to play if this was the regular season, but he indicated it wasn’t such a big deal.
“What I understand, it’s not an issue at all,” McLaren said. “What I understand he did it sleeping. He slept on it wrong or something.”
This is certainly no time to start thinking Sexson won’t make it to opening day, although there already have been wishful whispers — not by anyone with the Mariners, mind you — mentioning Jeff Clement’s name as a possible roster replacement. Someday, maybe this year, Clement will be up with the M’s producing runs with that sweet left-handed swing. But not now.
