The results aren’t official yet—a handfull of skiers still have to race, though none are contenders—but Bode Miller is going to win a silver medal, while U.S. teammate Andrew Weibrecht is going to take home a surprise bronze. Those two medal are numbers five and six for U.S. alpine skiers (men and women), surpassing the previous U.S. high of five won in 1984. Even more impressive, those medals have come in just four events, meaning the U.S. men and women have six more races to add to the record medal haul.
Weibrecht, who is skiing in his first Olympics and has never had a World Cup finish better than 10th, was just the third skier out of the gate, but his time withstood a number of challenges before Miller took the lead by just .03 seconds. Norway’s Aksel Lund Svindal was eventually able to pass the Americans, but no one else could bump Weibrecht from the podium.
