SEATTLE – The Washington men’s basketball team gets its one and only tune-up before the start of the regular season when it plays host to Saint Martin’s in an exhibition game at 7 p.m. tonight at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
This will be the only exhibition game the Huskies will play prior to opening the season Nov. 12 at home when they play host to the three-day Basketball Travelers Classic.
Washington is coming off of a 26-7 season and its second-straight trip to the Sweet 16. But this will be a new look Husky team that must replace Brandon Roy, Bobby Jones, Jamaal Williams and Mike Jensen. In their place is a team that features eight freshmen or sophomores.
The most well known of the highly-ranked recruiting class 7-foot center Spencer Hawes is not likely to play today as he continues to recover from knee surgery. He’s expected to play in the season-opener against Pepperdine. Also out today is junior guard Joel Smith, who is about a week away from returning from foot surgery.
The two players Husky coach Lorenzo Romar said are sure starters are power forward Jon Brockman of Snohomish and point guard Justin Dentmon, the team’s two returning starters.
Saint Martin’s, located in Lacey, is a member of the NCAA Division II Great Northwest Athletic Conference. The Saints were 7-20 last year, including 2-16 in the GNAC. The leading returning scorer is 6-5 junior forward Brendan Campbell of Bremerton, who averaged 12.6 points and 5.4 rebounds. Stephen Harris, a 6-5 senior forward, averaged 11.9 points and Jake Linton, a 5-10 sophomore guard from Meadowdale High, averaged 11.0 points.
