EVERETT — University of Washington football player Johri Fogerson was charged Friday with two misdemeanors stemming from a March 3 traffic stop in south Snohomish County.
Fogerson, 21, was charged with resisting arrest and marijuana possession.
The Huskies running back broke free and
ran from a trooper who was attempting to arrest him and place him in handcuffs, Snohomish County deputy prosecutor Cheryl Johnson said in Everett District Court papers.
The trooper was trying to take Fogerson into custody after a traffic stop turned up a small amount of marijuana.
The
trooper “asked the defendant who the marijuana belonged to, and the defendant said it must belong to his girlfriend and that he was driving his girlfriend’s car,” Johnson wrote.
Fogerson had been stopped while driving a black Lexus eastbound on 164th Street near I-5. A headlight on the car was not working.
Fogerson ran from troopers and managed to elude a hunt of the area, which included a police dog, according to court papers.
He surrendered about three hours after running away.
“The defendant was wearing the same grey hoodie and sweatpants that were now soiled with mud and foliage stains,” Johnson wrote. When asked why he ran, Fogerson allegedly said that he was “just scared.”
In accordance with athletic department policy, Fogerson was “suspended indefinitely” at the time of the arrest and remains on suspension, a UW official said Friday.
The school planned no further comment, the official said.
As a sophomore in 2009, Fogerson served as the Huskies’ No. 2 running back behind starter Chris Polk. Fogerson rushed for 46 yards on 17 carries and scored one rushing touchdown. He also caught 17 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown.
This past fall, Fogerson injured his hip in the season opener against BYU and did not play the rest of the season. He had just one carry for 6 yards.
His role for next season already was in question. The UW returns its top two rushers, Polk (1,415 yards) and Jesse Callier (433), from last season’s team that posted a 7-6 record and won the Holiday Bowl.
Fogerson was a star running back at Seattle’s O’Dea High School before moving on to Washington. His younger brother, Zach, was a freshman fullback for the Huskies this past season.
