Huskie hang on for a win
Portland State put forth quite a comeback effort, but the Huskies held on for an 84-83 win. Down 78-62, the Vikings went on a 16-1 run to make it a one-point game. With the Huskies clinging to a one-point lead, Quincy Pondexter just managed to get his hand on an Isaiah Thomas miss and the tip went in to make it a three-point game with 26 seconds left. Phil Nelson airballed a three—he had made three straight before that—and Thomas rebounded and was fouled. He made one of two, then after a Jeremiah Dominguez layup, Justin Dentmon was fouled and made both to make it a four-point game with 4.9 seconds left.
Dominic Waters hit a three at the buzzer and initiated a bit of contact, but didn’t get the call.
Matthew Bryan-Amaning led the Huskies with 23 points and 12 rebounds, while Pondexter added 21 and eight. Justin Dentmon also had 20 points and Isiah Thomas has 16.
Waters led the Vikings with 19 points.
A career night for MBA
Matthew Bryan-Amaning is certainly taking advantage of tonight’s start, as the sophomore foward has 20 points and 12 rebounds—both career highs—with 7:34 still left in the game. He gave the Huskies a 15-point lead and got the crowd excited with a big dunk on a fast break.
UW up 15
An Isaiah Thomas layup gave the Huskies a 61-46 lead moments ago, the biggest lead of the night for the Dawgs. Thomas now has 12 points, making him the fourth Husky in double-figure scoring. Quincy Pondexter leads the way with 17 right now, and Matthew Bryan-Amaning is just a rebound away from a double-double.
If Jon Brockman’s ankle injury doesn’t turn into a long-term problem, having to figure out how to get a win without him might not be such a bad thing for the Huskies.
It’s 61-46 with 15:33 left in the game.
Huskies lead 48-39 at halftime
Matthew Bryan-Amaning is doing a pretty nice job filling in for the injured Jon Brockman, scoring 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds so far. He’s one of three Huskies in double-figure scoring along with Quincy Pondexter and Justin Dentmon, who both have 13.
The Huskies are winning the rebounding battle 23-15 even without Brockman, and both teams have been pretty awful from the free-throw line: Washington is six for 13 while Portland State is 12 for 21.
Jeremiah Dominguez, back from a finger injury that caused him to miss Portland State’s last two games, has 11 to lead the Vikings. Dominic Watters added nine points, all of which came in a a span of 1 minute, 38 seconds as the Vikings cut a 10-point lead down to three.
Washington has led by as many as 12, and has led to 10 a couple of other times, but Portland State has so far been finding answers to stay in the game.
UW lead up to 10
Portland State was down just a point a few minutes ago, but a 9-0 UW run has the Huskies up 25-15 with 9:20 left in the half. Matthew Bryan-Amaning and Quincy Pondexter each have seven points to lead the Huskies.
The Vikings are borrowing a page from the Huskies playbook, and are killing themselves with poor free-throw shooting (4 for 11), then again,t he Huskies aren’t lighting it up from the line either (3 for 7).
Washington 9, Portland State 5, 15:22 left in first half
Washington’s offense hasn’t really gotten a lot going so far without Brockman on the floor, though Isiah Thomas has created a few shots for himeself (and forced a couple), and Matthew Bryan-Amaning just completed a three-point play after getting fouled on a fast-break dunk.
PREGAME
Well, from the looks of things Brockman won’t be playing tonight, as he’s in warmups as the team comes out.
Matthew Bryan-Amaning, who scored a career-high 18 in Washington’s last game, will start in Brockman’s place, and the rest of the starting lineup will be the same: Isaiah Thomas, Justin Dentmon, Darnell Gant and Quincy Pondexter.
Portland State point guard Jeremiah Dominguez has missed the Vikings’ last two games with a finger injury, but he’ll get the start tonight.
And it looks like this game will be played in front of a pretty sparse crowd, not doubt in part because of the snow, and in part because finals are over and a lot of the students have headed home.
