SEATTLE — Mackenzie Argens scored 10 points as Washington beat crosstown rival Seattle 58-53 Wednesday night.
Argens scored all of her points in the first half and was the only Washington player to reach double figures. Kristi Kingma added nine points for the Huskies (4-4), and Regina Rogers pulled down nine rebounds.
Ashley Brown scored 19 points for the Redhawks (2-9), and Cassidy Murillo had 16.
Seattle was up 40-39 in the second half when the Huskies went on a 7-0 run to take the lead for good. Kingma started it with a 3-pointer, then Sami Whitcomb hit two layups to put the Huskies up 46-40 with 9:32 left.
The Redhawks didn’t got closer than three the rest of the way. A layup by Tatiana Heck pulled them to within 56-53 with 53.8 seconds to play, but Sarah Morton hit a pair of free throws for Washington to make it 58-53 with 43.9 seconds left.
Washington led 29-27 at halftime on a tip-in by Laura McLellan, but Seattle forged ahead 34-31 early in the second half.
Seattle was just 4 of 22 from inside the arc in the first half but stayed in the game by hitting 6-of-11 3s.
The schools, located within five miles of each other, played for the second straight year after a 24-year hiatus when Seattle was playing below the Division I level. The Redhawks are a D-I program again after a transition year last season.
