Former UCLA center Regina Rogers is coming back to Seattle to be a Husky.
Washington women’s basketball coach Tia Jackson announced Friday that Rogers, a graduate of Seattle’s Chief Sealth High School and one of the state’s top recruits in 2007, is transferring to Washington after earning honorable mention on the 2008 Pac-10 All-Freshman Team.
Rogers, who averaged 6.3 points and 4.3 rebounds for the Bruins last season, must sit out the 2008-2009 season because of NCAA transfer rules, and will then have three years of eligibility.
“I’m very happy to be coming home to be closer to my family,” Rogers said in a statement released by Washington. “To have them watch me play like they did in high school means a lot to me. I think the program at UW is going to be great.”
Rogers, whose father Reggie played basketball and football at Washington, will be one of eight new players at Washington next season along with five incoming freshmen and two junior-college transfers. Four of Washington’s six freshmen from last season — all of whom were recruited by former Washington coach June Daugherty — left during or after the season and transferred to other schools.
