With charitable fundraising as its purpose and a bit of good rivalry tossed in for sport, the upcoming Husky-Cougar Challenge at Desert Canyon Golf Resort near Lake Chelan promises to be an event that is both worthwhile and fun.

The tournament is scheduled for July 18-19 and proceeds will be divided equally between the Curtis Williams Fund and the Mike Utley Foundation. Williams died May 6, 18 months after being paralyzed from a spinal cord injury in a 1990 University of Washington football game. Utley, a former Washington State University player, is also paralyzed after a spinal cord injury suffered while playing with the NFL’s Detroit Lions.

“Curtis’ recent passing underscores his legacy of courage in the wake of a catastrophic injury,” said Jack Frei, director of golf at Desert Canyon. “Mike Utley’s continued devotion to spinal cord injury research now takes on an added dimension.”

Former quarterbacks Sonny Sixkiller of Washington and Clete Casper of Washington State are honorary chairmen of the event.

The tournament will be a Ryder Cup-style team competition between 50 two-man teams representing each university. The opening round on July 18 will be a two-man best-ball format, followed by a two-man alternate-shot format the second day.

The individual entry fee is $250, which includes green fees and cart, a Cutter &Buck merchandise package valued at $140, complimentary range balls and a steak cookout on July 18.

For more information or to register for the tournament, call Desert Canyon Golf Resort at 1-800-258-4173. The resort can also make arrangements and provide accommodations in nearby Wenatchee.

Junior clinics at Battle Creek: Youngsters interested in learning to play golf will have an inexpensive opportunity this summer at Marysville’s Battle Creek Golf Course.

Clinics for boys and girls ages 8-17 are scheduled for June 24-25, July 8-9, July 22-23, Aug. 5-6 and Aug. 18-19. The cost for a two-day session (two hours each day) is $25. There is a maximum of 10 students for each class, which will be taught by two PGA instructors.

For more information, contact Battle Creek at 360-659-7931 or 1-800-655-7931.

Battle Creek to host Buick Scramble: The Buick Scramble tournament will be Sunday at Battle Creek, with starting times between 9-10 a.m.

Cost for the event is $95 per player and includes green fee, range balls, one dozen golf balls, a $50 gift certificate (after a Buick test drive) and lunch. There is a 2002 Buick for the first hole-in-one on the No. 9 hole.

The low-net team winner advances to the sectional tournament.

For more information, contact Battle Creek at 360-659-7931 or 1-800-655-7931.

Free clinic at Seattle’s Jefferson Park: A free one-day instructional golf camp for kids 7-18 will be held from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday at Seattle’s Jefferson Park Golf Course. The event, sponsored by the Fir State Junior Golf Foundation, includes demonstration, instruction, lunch, tee bag gifts and the chance to play three holes on the Jefferson Park short nine. Clubs will be provided for lessons, but those wanting to play the short nine should have their own clubs.

Youngsters attending the camp can sign up for Fir State’s free junior golf program, which begins later this month. The six-week program provides equipment, instruction, practice and competitive opportunities for beginning, intermediate and advanced juniors.
