The Tips announced this evening that left wing Paul Van de Velde has been reassigned to Waywayseecappo of the MJHL.
This is an interesting move. On the one hand Van de Velde is a 19-year-old who was playing limited minutes on the fourth line. I’m sure he’d like to play more, and I’m sure the Tips would like young forwards Campbell Elynuik, D.Jay McGrath and Josh Winquist to get more playing time in order to develop. In that sense I can see why this happened.
However, the timing of the move is curious. Everett’s just about to head out on its eastern road trip, which is always a grind. Reassigning Van de Velde means the Tips have 13 forwards on the roster, just one more than usually dress for a game. Plus, left wing Dan Iwanski and center Chris Langkow have been out injured (though both practiced today and the Tips hope both will be ready Wednesday), while right wing Kellan Tochkin is out sick. With defenseman Ryan Murray (broken thumb) definitely out for the road trip and with defenseman Alex Theriau also missing practice today because of illness, one has to wonder whether the Tips will have enough healthy bodies to make it through the trip.
