The National Shooting Sports Foundation estimates 2.8 million pounds of protein-rich, low-fat game meat is donated each year by hunters to food banks, church kitchens and shelters, for those in need. The organization estimates 11 million meals result from venison donations annually. The NSSF said in a release that last year in Missouri, for example, 4,500 hunters donated more than 227,000 pounds of venison through a state program.
The NSSF website Hunters Feed can assist in finding a charitable food provider, and state wildlife agencies, local fish and game clubs or food banks can help as well.
The tradition of hunters donating deer and other game for charitable purposes is longstanding, and the impact of that generosity is told in NSSF’s infographic, Hunters Feed Those in Need.
