Viking girls golfers win Wesco North

OAK HARBOR – As unpredictable and unstable as the weather was Monday afternoon, the Lake Stevens’ girls golf team was just the opposite – completely balanced.

With the Vikings’ top five golfers averaging 45 Stableford points and three of them pushing into the top 10, Lake Stevens edged Snohomish 225-219 to win the Western Conference North Division tournament.

“We drove through snow and hail, but when we got to Whidbey it was mainly a sunny day with a little wind,” said Lake Stevens coach Larry Palmer. “I’m most proud of Brianna Nishikawa, however. She’s been our leader all year and she really set the tone for our girls.”

Nishikawa scored 53 points to finish in fourth place on the par-73, 18-hole Whidbey Golf &Country Club course.

“(Nishikawa) was really tense before the meet, but she beared down and was really exhausted afterwards,” Palmer said.

Oak Harbor placed three golfers in the top five, but a lack of depth hurt the Wildcats, who finished in third place with 212 points.

“We had the lead after our first three golfers finished, but then our lack of depth dwindled (our lead) down,” said Oak Harbor coach Scott McPhee.

Cascade’s Renee Skidmore kept up her dominance in Wesco play by earning medalist honors with 65 points. As a team, Cascade finished tied for sixth with Stanwood with 181 points.

Wesco South Division tournament: Four of Kamiak’s five golfers finished with more than 30 Stableford points to lead the Knights to victory in the Wesco South tournament and a first place finish in the Wesco South year-end standings. Shorewood’s Kim Shin earned medalist honors by garnering 41 Stableford points with Meadowdale’s Meredith Horgan second with 36.
