Vikings clinch at least tie for first

SNOHOMISH – Wrestling powerhouse Lake Stevens clinched at least a piece of its first-ever Western Conference North Division title Tuesday by defeating Snohomish 64-3 at Snohomish High School.

The Vikings won all but one match, including four first-round pins, on their way to the commanding victory.

Lake Stevens (7-0 in league and 10-0 overall) will wrestle Oak Harbor (6-1, 8-1) Thursday night the final league meet for both teams. If Lake Stevens wins, it will clinch an the title outright. If it loses, it will share the title with Oak Harbor and Cascade.

The Vikings’ league title will come in its first year after making the jump from the 3A to 4A. At the 3A and 2A levels the Vikings built a reputation as one of the toughest programs in the state year in and year out, and have won their respective league title the past 12 years.

“They’re tough and they’re obviously gonna be among the top three or four in state with the level of their maturity and strength,” said Snohomish coach Mark Perry.

Travis Warrington’s 4-0 decision at 103 pounds and Christian Anderson’s 6-3 decision at 160 were two of the harder-fought matches of the night.

Burke Barnes pinned his 125-pound opponent just 36 seconds into the first round, only to be outdone by teammate Erik Curnett at 130 pounds with a 30-second pin.

Corey Cummins highlighted Snohomish’s night by winning a 2-0 decision in the 112-pound match.

Mount Vernon 63, Monroe 12: Eric Cunningham had a 33-second pin to highlight Mount Vernon’s Wesco North victory. Torger Twedt had Monroe’s lone pin at 103 pounds.
