Archbishop Murphy finally started its fifth/eighth-place 2A match against West Valley of Spokane. The match was delayed about 45 minutes because of long-running earlier matches.
In 4A, Monroe and Edmonds-Woodway both suffered first-round losses and play loser-out consolation contests tomorrow.
Monroe lost against Rogers of Puyallup, which was fueled by outstanding junior outside hitter Ashleigh Pollard. The 5-foot-11 Pollard blasted several powerful kills and hurt Monroe with a wicked top-spin jump serve. Kylin Munoz, Monroe’s high-flying junior outside hitter, led Monroe with 18 kills.
Rogers had a rowdy group of student fans that seemed to inspire the Rams. The fans got especially loud when Pollard attacked, chanting, “Laser! Laser!” when Monroe failed to return one of Pollard’s scorching, sinking serves.
