Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for Feb. 6-12

The Athlete of the Week nominees for Feb. 6-12. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with the next poll and in next Tuesday’s edition of The Herald.

Samara Morrow | Arlington | Girls Basketball

Morrow, a junior, connected on six 3-pointers and scored a game-high 27 points as the Eagles sealed up their second straight Wesco 3A/2A title with a 56-38 victory over Shorewood on Jan. 31. She added 12 points in Arlington’s 85-38 win over Monroe on Feb. 2. Morrow won The Herald’s Athlete of the Week voting for Jan. 30-Feb. 5 by claiming 417 (38%) of 1,097 votes.

This week’s nominees

Ahmad Banishamsa | Lake Stevens | Boys Wrestling

Banishamsa, a junior, outlasted Tahoma’s Crew Lambro in a 1-0 decision to win the 106-pound championship at the 4A Region 1 Tournament on Feb. 11. Banishamsa won two matches via pinfall to reach the finals.

Mason Ferguson | Stanwood | Boys Wrestling

Ferguson, a senior, knocked off Yelm’s William Carreto, who placed fifth at Mat Classic last season, in a 7-6 decision to claim the 182-pound title at the 3A Region 1 Tournament on Feb. 11. Ferguson picked up wins by pinfall and major decision to reach the title bout.

Tyler Gildersleeve-Stiles | Snohomish | Girls Basketball

Gildersleeve-Stiles, a sophomore, netted a game-high 25 points in the Panthers’ 64-59 triple overtime victory over Everett in a 3A District 1 Tournament quarterfinal battle on Feb. 10.

Finley Houck | Shorewood | Girls Wrestling

Houck, a freshman, topped Kamiak’s Rebecca Serati by a 7-2 decision to win the 105-pound title at the 3A/4A Region 1 Tournament on Feb. 11. Houck beat a pair of wrestlers ranked in the top six of the 105-pound weight class by Washington Wrestling Report on her way to the title.

Nate Huh-Orrantia | Marysville Getchell | Boys Swim & Dive

Huh-Orrantia, a senior, delivered a 11-dive score of 347 points to take first place in diving at the 3A District 1 swim and dive championships on Feb. 11.

Danny Savovic | Everett | Boys Basketball

Savovic, a senior, exploded for a game-high 34 points and added eight rebounds and five assists as the Seagulls knocked of Snohomish 70-62 in a first-round elimination game at the 3A District 1 Tournament on Feb. 9. He also had a team-high 21 points in Everett’s 57-47 quarterfinal loss to Mountlake Terrace on Feb. 11.

Kira Songer | Marysville Getchell | Girls Wrestling

Songer, a sophomore, beat Arlington’s Danielle Crew, ranked seventh in the state by Washington Wrestling Report, by an 11-0 major decision to earn the 115-pound championship at the 3A/4A Region 1 Tournament on Feb. 11. Songer also secured wins via first-period pin and forfeit.

Evan Wold | Archbishop Murphy | Boys Swim & Dive

Wold, a sophomore, swam winning times in the 200-yard individual medley and the 100 breaststroke at the 2A District 1 swim and dive championships on Feb. 11. Wold finished the 200 IM in 2 minutes, 3.50 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:02.29.
