Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for Nov. 1-7

The Athlete of the Week nominees for Nov. 1-7. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with next week’s poll and in next Tuesday’s paper. Each weekly winner will be included in an Athlete of the Month poll.

Jordyn Latta | Archbishop Murphy | Girls soccer

Latta, a senior, netted two goals and added two assists in the Wildcats’ 8-0 victory over Squalicum in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A District 1 Tournament on Oct. 30. She also had three assists as Archbishop Murphy beat Mountlake Terrace 7-0 in its regular-season finale on Oct. 26. Latta won The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week voting for Oct. 24-31 by claiming 823 (37.2%) of 2,210 votes.

This week’s nominees

Ryder Bumgarner | Stanwood | Football

Bumgarner, a junior, racked up 279 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries in the Spartans’ 40-34 upset victory over Class 3A No. 8 Lincoln on Nov. 5 as Stanwood secured its first state playoff berth since 1996. He also had an interception on defense.

Mary Clarke | Snohomish | Girls swim & dive

Clarke, a sophomore, broke the Panthers’ 21-year-old program record in the 50 freestyle and Class 3A District 1 championship meet records in the same race and the 100 freestyle on Nov. 6 at Snohomish Aquatic Center. She finished the 50 freestyle in 23.71 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.43 seconds. She also swam the anchor legs for Snohomish’s victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relays teams.

Addison Dizard | Glacier Peak | Girls soccer

Dizard, a senior, delivered the game-winning goal for the Grizzlies’ as they clinched a Class 4A state tournament berth with a 2-1 win over Mount Si in a loser-out Class 4A Wes-King Bi-District Tournament clash Nov. 6.

Paige Gerrard | Snohomish | Girls cross country

Gerrard, a sophomore, finished in sixth place in the Class 3A girls state cross country championship race at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Nov. 6. She finished the 5,000-meter course in 18 minutes, 51.8 seconds.

Brandon Moore | Arlington | Boys cross country

Moore, a senior, capped his prep cross country career with a second-place finish in the Class 3A boys state cross country championship race at Sun Willows Golf Course in Pasco on Nov. 6. He finished the 5,000-meter course in a personal-best time of 15 minutes, 34.1 seconds.

Justice Taylor | Lakewood | Football

Taylor, a senior, ended his prep football career with a record-setting performance in the Cougars’ 81-31 thumping of Lynnwood on Nov. 5. The Lakewood QB set school records with 375 yards and seven touchdowns rushing, and also threw for 202 yards and four scores, amassing a whopping 11 TDs on the night.

Leah Wierschke | Jackson | Girls swim & dive

Wierschke, a senior, won the diving competition at the Class 4A District 1 championship meet on Nov. 6. She finished with an 11-dive score of 391.8 points to beat out two other state qualifiers.

Alyvia Wright | Darrington | Volleyball

Wright, a senior, dished out 29 assists and added four kills, two aces and two blocks as the Loggers sealed up a Class 1B state volleyball tournament berth with a victory in straight sets over Orcas Island in a loser-out district matchup Nov. 6. Wright also had 25 assists, 11 digs, five aces and two kills in a quarterfinal win over Fellowship Christian on Nov. 2.
