Vote for The Herald’s Prep Athlete of the Week for Oct. 4-10

The Athlete of the Week nominees for Oct. 4-10. Voting closes at midnight Sunday. The winner will be announced with next week’s poll and in Tuesday, Oct. 19’s paper. Each weekly winner will be included in an Athlete of the Month poll.

Riley Hoople | Granite Falls | Football

Hoople, a senior, had a passing, rushing and receiving touchdown in the Tigers’ 48-0 win over rival Sultan on Oct. 1. He finished with 61 yards passing, 77 rushing and 15 receiving. He won last week’s poll by claiming 362 (31.2%) of 1,162 votes.

This week’s nominees

Ryder Bumgarner | Stanwood | Football

Bumgarner, a junior, scored three touchdowns and forced two turnovers in the Spartans’ 35-13 victory over Cascade on Oct. 8. He ran for 151 yards and three scores on 20 carries on offense, adding a 42-yard reception, and had two interceptions on defense.

Madelynn Butler | Lake Stevens | Girls swim and dive

Butler, a senior, won the 200-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly as Lake Stevens edged Snohomish 92-88 in a dual meet on Oct. 7. She swam the 200 freestyle in 2 minutes, 1.93 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 1:01.12. Butler was also a member of the Vikings’ victorious 200 medley and 400 freestyle relay teams.

Anna Knyphausen | Shorecrest | Volleyball

Knyphausen, a senior, racked up 31 kills and 23 blocks over three games to help the Scots go 2-1 on the week, including 10 kills and 10 blocks in a 3-1 win over Everett on Oct. 5.

Leia Jones | Stanwood | Girls cross country

Jones, a senior, won the girls varsity silver race at the 38th annual Hole in the Wall Invitational on Oct. 9 at Lakewood High School. She finished the 5,000-meter race 26.5 seconds ahead of her nearest competitor with a personal-best time of 18 minuties, 50.4 seconds.

Cailin Miller | Granite Falls | Girls soccer

Miller, a freshman, delivered a shutout in the Tigers’ 5-0 victory over Forest Ridge on Oct. 7. Miller has racked up a whopping 160 saves through 11 games.

Ty Rusko | Arlington | Boys tennis

Rusko, a junior, remained unbeaten in Wesco 3A North matches this season with four No. 1 singles wins over the week. He won 6-4, 4-2 on Monday; 6-0, 6-2 on Wednesday; 6-0, 6-1 on Thursday; and 6-0, 6-1 on Friday.

Luke Schmidt | Shorecrest | Boys cross country

Schmidt, a junior, won the boys varsity gold race at the 38th annual Hole in the Wall Invitational on Oct. 9 at Lakewood High School. He finished the 5,000-meter race 28 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor with a personal-best time of 15 minutes, 26.3 seconds.
