Warriors eyeing fourth straight title

EDMONDS — The Edmonds-Woodway boys tennis team hasn’t won three straight Wesco South titles by getting ahead of itself.

Led by some seniors — and one junior — who’ve never known anything else but the top rung of the division ladder, the Warriors took another step toward a fourth straight title with a 7-0 victory over Kamiak in a Wesco South match Friday at Edmonds-Woodway High School.

“We’re looking for a fourth straight title,” Edmonds-Woodway head coach Dan Crist said after the match. “I like our position (atop the standings), but its not over until its over. We’ve still got some good teams to play. It’s way too early to celebrate.”

The first two doubles matches, both decided in three sets, were the most exciting of the Warriors’ match with Kamiak (9-3 in league and overall), Crist said.

Max Ortiz and Stephen Maldazys came back from dropping the second set to take the No. 1 doubles match for Edmonds-Woodway and Sean Laue and Alex Knell rallied from a set down to win at No. 2.

“No. 1 doubles was close all the way,” Crist said. “No. 2 was a great comeback win by our guys.”

While Maldazys is a junior, Ortiz, Laue and Knell are all seniors. Crist said winning a fourth straight Wesco South title — closing their prep careers never having known anything but being league champions — is a powerful motivator for the seniors.

“Not a lot of kids can say that,” Crist said.
