RENO, Nev. – Avery Johnson scored 16 points to lead the Golden State Warriors to an 89-71 NBA preseason win over the Seattle SuperSonics on Wednesday night.
Johnson, fighting for playing time as he begins his 17th NBA season, also had three assists.
Seattle never got closer than 15 points in the second half. Brent Barry led the Sonics with 16 points and Rashard Lewis added 11. Free-agent center Mikki Moore had 10 points and eight rebounds.
Seattle’s Ray Allen sat out the game as coach Nate McMillan looked at different combinations of players. Also missing was guard Luke Ridnour, one of the team’s two first-round draft picks in 2003, who is recovering from offseason abdominal surgery. He is expected to return to practice today.
Speedy Claxton had nine of the Warriors’ 24 assists. Golden State’s Nick Van Exel and Mike Dunleavy Jr. did not play after being hurt in practice Monday.
