SEATTLE – Anthony Washington, whose career as a center for the University of Washington was marked with foot injuries, is leaving the basketball program and wants to transfer to another school.
The 6-foot-9, 245-pound junior averaged 3.3 points and 2.1 rebounds last season with the 19-12 Huskies, who finished second in the Pacific-10 Conference and competed in the NCAA Tournament.
Washington’s only double figure scoring game came duringthe 2003-04 season opener when he tallied 14 points in a win over Portland State on Nov. 21. He grabbed a career-high seven rebounds against Arizona State on Jan. 31.
But that was as good as it would get for the prospect from Garfield High School. He averaged 4.8 points and 3.2 rebounds a game as a freshman in the 2002-03 season. He made 12 starts and played in 20 games, but he missed seven mid-season games because of an injured left foot.
That injury plagued him in some form his entire time at Washington.
“We wish Anthony success,” UW coach Lorenzo Romar said. “It was unfortunate early in his career that he suffered a foot injury that didn’t allow him to play his best basketball.”
Washington says he intends to complete fall quarter at UW before transferring. He has not declared his transfer destination.
The Huskies begin camp in mid-October. After playing host in two exhibition games against EA Sports and Athletes in Action on Nov. 8 and Nov. 12, respectively, Washington opens the regular season against Portland State Nov. 21 at Hec Edmundson Pavilion.
