SEATTLE — Regina Rogers and Mercedes Wetmore scored 17 points each to help Washington rally from a 17-point first-half deficit and beat Cal State Northridge 73-67 on Saturday.
Wetmore had 15 in the second half to reach her career high.
Rogers made an inside basket to put the Huskies up 64-63 with 4 minutes left. They led the rest of the way.
“Coach (Kevin McGuff) came in and told us we’re not playing Husky basketball, we’re not moving the ball and we’re not playing our defense,” Rogers said about the second-half rally. “We were kind of jittery, I guess, in the beginning. We weren’t playing like us. But we didn’t give up. We were ready in the second half.”
Jazmine Davis scored 12 points and Mackenzie Argens 10 for Washington (2-1), which won its second consecutive game.
“We really, really struggled the first half,” McGuff said. “We had a lack of focus and concentration. Northridge played much harder than we did in the first half and really kind of took it to us. But to our team’s credit, we got things together at halftime, and I was proud of our effort in the second half.”
Jasmine Erving had 21 points and 10 rebounds to lead Northridge (2-2), which dropped its second straight. Janae Sharpe added 12 points and Kaitlyn Petersen nine.
The Matadors led 33-16 with 6:40 remaining in the first half. They were up 63-60 with 5:17 left before Washington outscored them 13-4 to close the game.
“Our philosophy is on the defensive end, so when you get stops, it makes it easier to be successful,” Northridge coach Jason Flowers said. “In the first half we were getting stops, and in the second half we weren’t.”
Wetmore hit 5 of 6 free throws down the stretch. She was 9 of 10 for the game. The Huskies shot 25 of 30 (83.3 percent) from the line.
The game had three lead changes and five ties after Rogers made an inside basket to put the Huskies up 49-48 midway through the second half, their first lead of the game.
