TEMPE, Ariz. — Danielle Lawrie struck out seven in top-ranked Washington’s 9-0 win over Arizona State on Sunday, making her the Pacific-10 Conference’s all-time career strikeout leader.
Lawrie has 407 strikeouts this season and 1,772 in her career. She ranks fifth in NCAA history for career strikeouts and needs two more to take over fourth.
It also was Lawrie’s nation-leading 20th shutout of the season for the Pac-10 champion Huskies (45-6, 17-4), who won the league title outright for the first time since 1996. She improved her record to 35-2, giving her 131 career victories — second-best in Pac-10 history and eighth-best in NCAA history. She has won 11 straight games since her last loss April 17.
Against the 10th-ranked Sun Devils on Sunday, Lawrie allowed just two hits, did not walk a batter and went 3-for-3 with five RBI at the plate. She leads Washington 55 RBI this season.
UW started fast game in a shortened to five innings by the mercy rule. The Huskies scored two runs in the first inning and two more in the second. They put the game away with a five-run burst in the fourth.
Besides Lawrie, the Huskies also got good performances from Jenn Salling, who went 2-for-2 with two runs and an RBI; Niki Williams, who drove in a pair of runs with her 10th homer of the season; and Kimi Pohlman, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and three runs scored.
The Huskies now turn their attention to the NCAA tournament, where they look to become just the sixth repeat winner in Division I history. They find out who they play and where tonight.
