The Tulalip “bubble” salmon fishery, outside Tulalip Bay, opens for wild chinook and coho Friday, offering at least a fair shot at adult summer kings. All Star Charters skipper/owner Gary Krein said he has heard that tribal netters inside the bay have been taking “a handful” of fish every day, which should translate to a few in the bubble available to sport fishermen.
Krein said he would troll at 40 to 70 feet, over 40 to 200 feet of water, and there’s no need to worry about staying on the bottom in this fishery. He would start with a Kingfisher or Coyote spoon in some shade of green, but would be equipped to change spoon colors, or go to a squid if necessary.
“Don’t be afraid to experiment,” he said. “A relatively static fishery such as this one is a good opportunity to try different lures and different colors.”
Some anglers have done well jigging items such as the Point Wilson Dart, in 15 to 30 feet of water, Krein said. Again, green would be a good color to start.
