Saturday’s salmon opener at Sekiu was a little on the slow side, according to Glen Teeter at Van Riper’s Resort (360-963-2334), and the wind didn’t make things any easier.
“The weekend was tough, but (the fishing) has picked up pretty well since then,” Teeter said.
Chinook have been running 8 to 10 pounds on the average, and were scattered. The best bets are Mussolini Rock and Eagle Bay, Teeter said.
Herring seemed to be the choice of most successful anglers, edging out a wide range of lures.
“The guys were throwing a little bit of everything at ’em,” Teeter said, “but bait worked best.”
Sekiu is open for two salmon daily. All chum, wild chinook and wild coho must be released.
