Apparently somebody on the coaching staff lit a fire under the defense before today’s practice, because there was some serious hitting going on. The big hit of the day—and probably of the year so far—came when Deion Butler caught pass in the flat and was absolutely hammered at full speed by Lawyer Milloy. This wasn’t a “hit the guy and let up because it’s practice” type of hit, but the kind that would look violent even in a game. Good times.
Roy Lewis also put a pretty good stick on Ben Obomamu, knocking the receiver to the ground, and the trash talk was at full volume as well.
As he has done for most of the month, Marcus Trufant stood out. It’s become more and more clear each day that he is fully past the back problems that hindered him last season. Trufant ended the day with an interception to kill a drive in a two-minute drill, one of several interceptions for the defense. Jordan Babineaux also came up with a pick, tipping a pass up in the air, then pulling it in with one hand.
Chester Pitts, who came of the physically unable to perform list this week, took part in practice in a very limited way. G Ben Hamilton sat out today with an ice bag on his knee. Pete Carroll already said that Mike Gibson, who worked with the first team the last two days, will likely start Saturday’s preseason game at left guard.
Linebackers Leroy Hill and David Hawthorne continued to sit out. S Kevin Ellison and TE Chris Baker both returned to practice after being out yesterday.
