Wesco North powers tie

EVERETT – In soccer, zeroes can be misleading.

Oak Harbor and Cascade fought to a 0-0 tie Thursday night in a Western Conference North Division girls game at Everett Memorial Stadium. An outsider might think not much happened, but Cascade coach Jamie Gay knows better.

“In general, both teams had lots of opportunities but both teams played well enough defensively not to give up a goal,” Gay said. “It was certainly played by two very good teams who knew what they wanted to do on the field.

“Unfortunately, we just couldn’t get that last touch in the net.”

The teams renewed their rivalry after placing 1-2 atop the Wesco North last year – Oak Harbor finished first. Goalkeepers Sheena Paddock (Oak Harbor) and Brittany Gegax (Cascade) stopped several scoring threats to keep their respective teams in the game, Gay said.

“Oak Harbor put us under a lot of pressure with their speed in the first half and had some good opportunities that (Gegax) saved.”

In the second half “we started to put (Oak Harbor) under pressure and (Paddock) did a good job of cleaning up.”

The absence of goals wasn’t frustrating because the quality of play was excellent, Gay said.

“We’re playing great soccer. We did a great job of knocking the ball around and getting forward. I think we’re playing really well.”
