Wesco teams fare quite well in girls swim meet featuring state’s elite

FEDERAL WAY – The Snohomish and Kamiak girls swim teams traveled to Federal Way Saturday and promptly established themselves as two of the top teams in the state. Snohomish tallied 559 points to win the 25-team meet, and Kamiak placed fourth with 402 points.

Bainbridge finished second with 545 points, followed by Mercer Island (500), Kamiak, Bellevue (377), and Kentridge (356).

Marysville-Pilchuck placed eighth with 248 points, while Shorecrest finished 17th with 82 points and Cascade scored 45 points to take 21st place.

Both Snohomish and Kamiak went out fast in the first event of the day, setting state-qualifying times in the 200-yard medley relay. Snohomish finished the event third. The Panthers swam a qualifying time of 1:55.65 in their first heat. Kamiak (1:57.27) swam its best time during the final.

Kamiak’s Laura Menard won the second event, the 200 yard freestyle in state-qualifying time of 2:00.85.

The Knights’ Bekha Kaas-Lent finished third in the 200 individual medley in 2:15.84, another qualifier. The Panther’s Sarah Shawback qualified in fourth (2:16.05).

Kamiak senior Kathryn Niemi (59.99) qualified for state in the 100 butterfly. Kamiak junior Taryn Van Gerpen (5:22.67) qualified for state in the 500 freestyle. Shorecrest’s Ayden Sarikaya finished second in that event and also qualified for state.

Kamiak’s Laura Menard finished second in the 100 backstroke with a state-qualifying time of 1:01.57. Snohomish’s Sarah Shawback, who finished sixth in the 100 backstroke, also qualified for state with a time of 1:02.82. Shawback was also a member of the Panthers’ 200-medley relay and 400-yard freestyle relay teams, both of which qualified for state.

Marysville-Pilchuck’s Shantelle Souza finished second in the diving competition, scoring 177.25.

Jim Danner Invitational: At Gresham, Ore., The Snohomish Panthers finished third overall at one of the premier events in the Northwest, led by Kara Sporrong’s 11th-place finish.

Cascade 0, Marysville-Pilchuck 0: At Marysville, the Tomahawks and Bruins spent Saturday afternoon determining that they are pretty evenly matched defensive teams and finished in a 0-0 tie. Brittany Gegax was in goal for Cascade and Alyssa Lewis for M-P.

Lynden Christian 2, Lakewood 1: At Lynden, the Cougars led the non-league game 1-0 until the last two minutes, when they gave up two quick scores and lost. Sophomore Melissa Osburn scored Lakewood’s goal early during the first half.

Lake Stevens 2, Arlington 0: At Arlington, Raelynne Lee and Caitlin Hurt each scored a goal Saturday, leading Arlington to the Wesco North win. Head coach Dianne Mattingly said the team wasn’t at its best and that anticipation of Saturday’s homecoming dance might have had something to do with that.

Snohomish 35, Kentlake 14: At Kent, the Panthers’ offense continued to purr as they beat Kentlake in non-league action. Eight Snohomish ballcarriers shared 35 carries and racked up 360 rushing yards. Steve Harrington (nine rushes for 85 yards and three touchdowns), Nick Mundell (three rushes for 80 yards) and Luke Darling (nine for 74) carried the largest portion of the load.

Darrington 3, Nooksack Valley 2: At Darrington, the 3-4 Loggers were tested by 2-5 Nooksack Valley. Darrington won the non-league match 23-25, 25-16, 23-25, 25-23 and 15-9. The Loggers were led by Ashley Armstrong with 15 kills and two blocks, Mandy Powell with 30 assists and Jen woodward who was 10 for 10 serving.
