LACEY — It was a day of disappointment Friday for Wesco teams at the Class 4A and 3A state volleyball tournaments.
The tournaments are being held at Saint Martin’s University and, for games in the consolation bracket, at nearby Timberline High School.
Four Wesco teams — Snohomish and Kamiak in Class 4A, and Edmonds-Woodway and Marysville Pilchuck in Class 3A — all lost their opening matches and dropped to the consolation brackets. Kamiak and Marysville Pilchuck then lost their second matches and were eliminated.
Edmonds-Woodway, which won the recent 3A District 1 tournament, won its second match and will continue in today’s consolation bracket. The Warriors face North Thurston in an 8 a.m. match, and with a win would advance to play in a final match at 5:15 p.m. for seventh and eighth places.
Snohomish was playing a late consolation match Friday night against Central Valley of Spokane, and with a win the Panthers would move to today’s consolation round with a hope of also playing in the match for seventh and eighth places.
Snohomish, the Class 4A District 1 champ, opened the state tournament against Tahoma of Maple Valley, the No. 4 team from District 3. The Panthers nabbed an early lead, but ended up losing the first set 25-20.
In the second set, Snohomish fell behind 6-0, but rallied. The Panthers trailed 24-21, but dramatically ran off five consecutive points to clinch the match 26-24.
Though it seemed like the momentum perhaps had swung, Snohomish could never get and hold the upper hand. The next two sets were close throughout, but the Panthers ended up dropping both by scores of 25-22.
Kamiak, the other Wesco 4A team, got off to an encouraging start against University of Spokane with a 25-20 win in the first set. But the Knights then lost three straight hard-fought sets, 25-20, 25-22 and 25-22.
In an evening consolation match, Kamiak faced Eisenhower of Yakima and the Cadets prevailed in the opening set and then wrapped up the match by powering past the Knights in the second and third sets, both times by scores of 25-11.
In Class 3A, Edmonds-Woodway started well against Eastside Catholic, winning the first set 25-21. But the Warriors then dropped the next three sets, 25-18, 25-13 and 25-21, sending them to the consolation bracket.
Edmonds-Woodway managed some good news for Wesco teams on Friday by knocking off Ferndale in its next match, 26-24, 25-23, 22-25 and 25-21, to remain alive in the consolation bracket.
Also in 3A, Marysville Pilchuck fell in its opener in three sets to Mercer Island, 25-14, 25-21 and 25-16. The Tomahawks then took on Seattle Prep and seemed to take command of the match, winning the first two sets 26-24 and 25-21. But Marysville Pilchuck could not win the third set it needed to advance, losing in succession by scores of 25-21, 25-12 and 15-8.
In the 2A tournament at Pierce College in Tacoma, Natalie Hayward had 15 kills, Jaime Cymbaluk added 13 and Sam Hayward had 12 to lead Archbishop Murphy to a 3-1 victory over Ellensburg. The Wildcats were supposed to play Tumwater in a quarterfinal match at 8:15 p.m. Friday, but the tournament was running at least an hour behind schedule, Murphy coach Brandon Jones said.
The Cascade Conference’s other entrant in the 2A tournament, Lakewood, was eliminated in two matches, losing to North Kitsap 3-2 and to East Valley of Spokane 3-1.
