Whetzel helps Jackson knock off Anacortes

MOUNT VERNON – Jennifer Whetzel led Jackson (7-17 overall) to a 2-1 victory over Anacortes Tuesday with a 223 game and a 563 series in a Western Conference girls bowling match at Riverside Lanes.

Teammate Leiann Reiter rolled a 207 game and a 539 series. Bethany Nolan had a 204 game and a 487 series for Anacortes (10-14).

In other matches, Everett defeated Ferndale 3-0 and Cascade beat Mount Vernon 3-0.

Jennifer Michel led Everett (18-6) with a 204 game and a 534 series. Margie Scribner had a 442 series for Ferndale (7-17).

Markeeta Munger had games of 201 and 213 and a 595 series for Cascade (22-2). The Bruins’ Tiffany Triechmann had a 235 game and a 581 series. Teammate Maddi Rizzuto had a 529 series. Jessica Tang led Mount Vernon (8-16) with a 216 game and a 557 series. Teammate Clarissa Wong had a 500 series.

Eight weeks into the 15-week season, the top three averages belong to Michel at 188, Munger at 185 and Triechmann at 181.

Boys basketball

Friday Harbor 63, Overlake 35: After losing most of its early 13-point lead, Friday Harbor cranked up the defensive intensity in the second half to create some easy transition baskets. Matt Cowell scored 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds and Sean Anderson added 16 points for Friday Harbor, which outscored Overlake 39-16 in the final 16 minutes of the non-conference game.
